Red roses mean love and passion. Pink means admiration and thanks, white stands for new beginnings and remembrance, and yellow for friendship. Orange stands for energy, and lavender for enchantment, even love at first sight. Most of these meanings come from the language of flowers that was popular in the 19th century, so they’re tradition rather than rules, and a card can always say the rest.
We’re Quinn Florist on Steinway Street in Astoria. February and May, the months of Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day, are our two busiest of the year. New York made the rose its state flower in 1955, “in any color or combination of colors common to it.” This guide covers what each rose color means, what the number of roses adds, and which color to choose for the occasion in front of you.

Shade matters as much as the color name. A pale pink and a hot pink rose signify different things, and the same yellow hue can look buttery in one bunch and almost orange in another. When the shade is important, look at a photo of the actual arrangement, not just its name.
Red Rose Meaning: Love and Passion
The red rose carries the clearest message in the list. Red roses symbolize romantic love and passion, and a dozen of them is still the standard Valentine’s Day gift. Deeper reds and burgundy lean toward commitment, while a bright red feels more like passion and excitement.
Because the meaning is so clear, red can be too much in the wrong setting. Red roses from a partner feel natural. The same bouquet from a coworker reads as a declaration, so for friends, family and colleagues, one of the other colors usually says what you mean with less confusion.
What Do Pink Roses Mean? Admiration and Gratitude

Pink roses convey admiration, gratitude and appreciation without the romantic weight of red. In the 19th-century language of flowers, pink stood for a lighter affection than red, which is exactly why pink works for so many people in your life.
Pale and blush pink suggest grace and quiet admiration, which suits a mother, a grandmother or a mentor. Hot pink, fuchsia and deep pink roses feel brighter, a lively way to say thank you or congratulations.
If you can’t decide between the two, our Pink Kiss arrangement puts soft pink and hot pink roses together in a glass bubble vase.
White Rose Meaning: New Beginnings and Remembrance
White roses carry two meanings that sit side by side. At a wedding they’re the symbol of purity and a new beginning, which makes them the classic choice for weddings and bridal bouquets. At a funeral or in a sympathy arrangement, they stand for remembrance, peace and respect.
Ivory roses and cream roses read the same way, with a slightly warmer look to the petals. Ours go out hand-tied with eucalyptus or in a clear glass vase, and they’re a natural choice for sympathy flowers.
If you’re sending white roses to someone grieving, the family’s own traditions matter more than the color chart. White is widely accepted, and a short card that says you’re thinking of them does more than any flower meaning can.
Yellow Rose Meaning: Friendship and Joy
Yellow is the friendship rose. In the language of flowers it stood for friendship or devotion, and today it’s the color people choose when they want warmth without romance. A bouquet of yellow roses says “I’m glad you’re in my life,” and they’re cheerful enough for a birthday, a get-well bunch or a friend’s good news.
Two dozen yellow roses in a glass vase make a bright, generous gift for a friend. If your friend prefers softer colors, yellow mixed with white or pink keeps the friendly message and tones down the brightness.
Orange Roses, Peach Roses and Coral
The warm shades between yellow and red each carry their own meaning:
- Orange roses mean energy, enthusiasm and fascination. They’re a natural choice for congratulations, a new job or a finished project.
- Peach roses suggest sincerity and a heartfelt thank-you, and they’re a gentle way to thank a colleague, a teacher or a host.
- Coral roses sit between peach and pink and read as warm admiration. Their meaning is less settled than the classic colors, so a card helps.
We use orange alongside red, pink, yellow and blush in our mixed rose arrangement, if you’d rather not settle on one meaning.
Lavender Roses and Purple Roses: Enchantment

Lavender roses are linked with enchantment and love at first sight. Roses can also come in darker purple, which adds mystery and fascination. They’re unusual enough to feel personal, which makes them a good choice for a first date or for someone who already has every other color.
Most lavender roses bloom a soft, silvery mauve rather than a true purple. In our Lavender Embrace bouquet, which comes hand-wrapped or in a glass vase, they sit with white lilies, hydrangeas and stock in purples and soft pinks.
Black, Blue, Green and Burgundy Roses
These four colors come up often in searches, and two of them aren’t quite what they seem.
Black roses don’t grow naturally. The roses sold as black are very dark red varieties, such as ‘Black Magic’ and ‘Black Baccara’, which look black in low light, or roses that have been dyed. In symbolism they stand for farewell, change or mourning, which is worth knowing before you send them as a gift.
Blue roses don’t occur in nature either. Bright blue roses are dyed. In 2002 a Japanese company produced a genetically modified “blue” rose, but its color is closer to lavender or pale mauve. Because a true blue rose doesn’t exist, blue roses stand for mystery and the unattainable.
Green roses are pale, lime-tinged varieties associated with renewal and growth. Burgundy roses are the deepest of the reds, and they signal a mature, committed love, the kind you’d send for a milestone anniversary.
You won’t find black, blue or green roses on our website.
What Red and White Roses Say Together
Red and white roses together stand for unity, love and devotion, since red carries passion and white a new beginning. That makes the pairing a good fit for engagements, weddings and anniversaries. Our red and white roses arrangement mixes the two with fresh greenery, and adding pink softens it into something that works for a wider range of occasions.
What One Rose, a Dozen, Two Dozen and Three Dozen Say

The number of roses adds a second layer to the color. These are the counts we’re asked about most:
- One rose: a simple, personal gesture. In red, it’s a quiet “I love you.”
- A dozen: the classic. A dozen red roses is the standard romantic gift, and a dozen of any other color is a complete, generous bunch.
- Two dozen: a bigger statement, often for a special anniversary or a thank-you that needs to be noticed.
- Three dozen: a grand gesture. Three dozen long-stem red roses are what people order for a proposal or a milestone.
Our red roses and our white roses each come in one, two or three dozen, and our pink and yellow roses in two dozen, so you can match the size to the message.
Which Rose Color to Send for Each Occasion
Valentine’s Day
Red is the safe answer for a partner. For a new relationship, pink or lavender says you’re interested without saying everything. Our Valentine’s Day flower guide covers the other flowers that work in February.
Mother’s Day
Pink for gratitude, yellow for joy, or a mix of both. Light pink and peach suit a mother who prefers soft colors. More ideas are in our Mother’s Day flower guide.
Birthday
Yellow, hot pink or a mixed bunch. Save red for a partner’s birthday.
Friend
Yellow. Add orange when you’re also celebrating something they’ve done.
Sympathy
White or ivory roses, alone or with white lilies and hydrangeas. Pale pink and lavender are gentle alternatives when the family prefers some color.
Rose Symbolism Works Best With a Card
Rose color meanings give you a starting point, and most people will read them the way you intend. They’re still tradition, and plenty of people simply have a favorite color. If you know the person loves yellow, yellow is the right rose, whatever the chart says. You can see every color we make in our rose arrangements, and our mixed rose designs pair roses with hydrangeas, lilies and orchids.
Rose Color Questions We Hear Often
Which color rose is the symbol of love?
Red has long been the color of romantic love, and a dozen red roses is the most common way to say it. Burgundy says the same thing with a deeper, longer-lasting feel.
What color rose means friendship?
Yellow is warm and cheerful without any romantic message, which is why yellow roses are the usual choice for a friend’s birthday or good news.
Do black roses really exist?
Not as a natural color. The roses called black are very dark red varieties that look black in low light, or roses that have been dyed.
Are blue roses real?
Not in nature. Blue roses you see for sale are dyed, and the one genetically modified “blue” rose is actually lavender in color.
What does a single red rose mean?
Love, in its simplest form. A single red rose is often given early in a relationship or as a small “I love you” between bigger occasions. A red rosebud, not yet open, traditionally means young love.
